From the moment Hoodwinker launches into life with a brutal burst of low-tuned guitars and crashing drums, followed by Rou Reynolds’ booming “This is the voice of God,” you just know we’re in for something special.
The trademark Enter Shikari choruses are there in all their glory, but the general feel of the new track is much heavier than I was expecting of the band’s new material – particularly the breakdowns after the choruses.
In true Shikari style there’s a lovely cheeky outro to cap things off, with Rou stating: “You are a Hoodwinker sir, what do you take me for, a fool? Cheeky fucker.”
Hoodwinker epitomises everything I love about Enter Shikari – the great lyrics, Reynolds’ unique vocals, and the heaviness just adds to it. So if this is a sign of what’s to come from the new album, then I really can’t wait to get my hands on it!
The video is also pretty cool, with the Shikari boys stranded in a little boat in the middle of the sea trying their damnedest to row to safety using their guitars and drums and then trying to swim for their lives.

And if this has whetted your appetite for a bit of Enter Shikari – frankly, how could it not have? – then their Live At Alexandra Palace record is due to be released on November 11th.
