Introducing: Three From Above

Punchy melodies and guitar riffs that rent space in your brain are the hallmarks of the energetic post-punk sound of Liverpool trio Three From Above.

The band tell us they first got together “on a whim,” when drummer Lewis McWilliam was asked to play a gig and agreed to do it, even though he didn’t have a band. Fast-forward three years and, joined by his brother Tom Collins (vocals and bass) and Harris (guitar and vocals), the band can’t stop writing.

As they tell us: “That’s the draw to music and being in a band, that urge to write and perform. Being in a band and writing your own material gives you that complete control over your art that you don’t necessarily get if you’re a writer or an actor. It’s writing your own script with your mates, getting on stage and just doing it.”

We first introduced you to the sound of the band in a New Music Friday round-up a few weeks back, when they launched latest single Magic Monday, which was inspired by Goran Ivanisevic winning Wimbledon in 2001.

On the track, they told us: “Magic Monday is a joyous celebration of determination and grit. There’s some tension in there but it’s mostly an indie rock singalong party.”

And their punky rockiness comes across more explicitly in the lively What I Want, with edgy vocals supported by palm-muted guitars then bursting into a lively chorus then the super-catchy repeats of “What I want.” Check it out in the video below:

While the excellent Hail Caesar! opens up with a huge drum roll then vocals supported by deliciously fuzzy guitars, before flowing into cool rolling guitar riffs. Check it out below:

The band takes inspiration from a wide range of bands, including the likes of Rage Against The Machine, IDLES, Biffy Clyro, The Clash and David Bowie, but their dynamic, sweaty live show is what the band is all about.

And on what inspires them to write music, they explain: “Whatever is affecting us when we get in the room together. Quite often it’s got a political tone to it but that’s just because of the times we’re living in. We’ve written about some more personal issues like our ode to mental health At Sea and even the great underdog story of Goran Ivanisevic, which is the theme this new single Magic Monday. Whatever makes us feel something, whatever moves us, we try to write about and hope it might touch the audience too.

There’s plenty more to come from Three From Above this year, as they say: “We’ve just been in the studio recording a few tracks which could turn into anything, more singles? An EP? An album? We don’t know yet. All we do know is you’ll be seeing and hearing a lot more of us this year. Stay tuned.

“And.. Get down to a live show. Preferably one of ours, but failing that, just get down to a live show. It’s important.”

We love their energetic punk-infused rocky sound and look forward to hearing much more from the band soon.
