Confused? We’ve just discovered a really cool Russian punk band, who become our second artist featured in our new Discover This feature.
Абсолютно Хорошее Настроение – whose name translates to Absolutely Good Mood and is pronounced Absolyutno Khorosheye Nastroyeniye (АХН) – hail from the south-west of Russia, in a city best known historically for being the location of the Battle of Stalingrad in World War II.
We took a listen to Солдат Неудачи, a track from their new album, and had a chat with the band to find out more – which you can read below.
The track opens up with a cool little bassline with drums then guitars creeping in before a fun darting riff. Rolling guitars and drums build the atmosphere and drop into a lively opening verse – of Russian vocals, which is the first time we’ve ever heard a band sing in Russian. It’s heavy, punky and super catchy, with plenty of fun punky riffs to keep you entertained. Give it a listen below:
GR: What’s the backstory? How and when did you get together? And what made you want to get involved in music / be in a band?
АХН: “The band was formed in Volgograd in 2012 (the idea of the band appeared in late 90s). The thing that made us get involved in music was thirst for something new, as it usually happens.”
Russian punk is a new genre for us! And we’ve only spoken to 1 Russian band before you. How much of a rock/music scene is there in Russia? And are there many bands that sing in Russian?
АХН: “Russian rock music is very different from rock music as it is understood in the West. For European or American hearing, most Russian rock bands sound like Indie, Singer-Songwriter or kind of Alternative. Unfortunately, we can’t say more because we know very little about the scene which we do not belong to.”
GR: How would you describe your sound to people that haven’t listened to you yet?
АХН: “It is characterised by a wide stylistic palette (from singer-songwriter, folk and punk to art rock and progressive rock) and unusual literary-centred lyrics.”
GR: What influences you to write music? Any key themes or topics that you write about?
АХН: “Life experiences in the first place. The theme is always the same – a person’s relationship with society and with himself.”
GR: Which bands/musicians are/have been your strongest musical influences?
АХН: “When we were young, we used to listen Early Rock-n-Roll, Psychedelic Rock, French Chanson, Soviet Estrada, Siberian Punk and many-many other things. We don’t care about any influences in our music. No one is unique, after all.”
GR: What have you got coming up through the rest of 2019?
АХН: “We are going to prepare new songs and to make a record as soon as possible. And to play gigs, of course. What should we do without gigs.”
GR: Anything else you’d like people to know about Абсолютно Хорошее Настроение?
АХН: “Абсолютно Хорошее Настроение are the veterans of Russian underground who have travelled a thorny path from psychedelia and the avant-garde through garage rock and folk-punk to the creative writing that is like nothing on earth.
“If we assume that there are ‘physics’ and ‘lyrics’ in underground music, then one of the key figures of the latter direction will be АХН with their songs about the most important, subtle and reverent things that exist in the soul of every person.”
