Discover This: Electric Tuxedo

London-based production trio Electric Tuxedo aren’t afraid to try something a little different and mix things up – with their songs ranging from indie-rock through to electronica meets dubstep.

The trio of Catalin Razlet-Condu and cousins Andrei Sora and Horia Stancu originally hail from Romania but have now settled in London. They released debut EP Circus back in 2016, which was a heavy-ish indie-rock effort, and have since honed their sound with a series of subsequent singles, of which the latest is Better Than Advertised.

It opens up with light guitars under vocals “Looking back at how we both got here, I love those stories that you loved to hear, Remember when we started all you’d do is test me, But no amount of what you put was too heavy, Tell me whose story should I tell again.”

It picks up a little with drums coming in under the vocals, which builds towards a chrous of a more upbeat cry “The more that I feel the more that I want, The more that I think the more that you harm me baby.” The vocals intensify for the second verse, then drop into another catchy chorus.

The track is a little more poppy than their debut, but builds up to big high-pitched vocals over a heavier drumbeat and flickering guitars. Give it a listen below:

GR: Who are Electric Tuxedo? And where are you from?

ET: “Electric Tuxedo are a production trio that dabbles in all things music. That’s not too much of an overstatement either, as we’re taking full advantage of the current state of the Internet. We obviously produce music (which we distribute on all relevant platforms, streaming or otherwise), but we also produce various content ranging from tutorials, vlogs, cover videos, improv sessions for YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, articles for LinkedIn and Medium, and soon a podcast for Anchor.

“We’re originally from Romania, but we moved to the UK a decade ago. We’re currently based in London, although that wasn’t always the case. Since the band’s formation, members have lived in Bucharest, Coventry, Birmingham, Oxford, and now, finally, London.”

GR: You just released Better Than Advertised. What should people be expecting from the song? What inspired you to write it?

ET: “Indeed we did! What we liked about the track and what we hope listeners will resonate with is the fact that Better Than Advertised is a love song with a happy ending. The track is a bit of a curveball on that front, so hopefully people will have their expectations subverted, in a good way.

“We felt that most love songs talk about yearning, heartbreak, or distant memories, and very few described situations where relationships actually work. All three of us are in solid, fulfilling relationships, so we wrote the track mirroring our experience. We felt that the topic of healthy intimate relationships was underpopulated, so we wanted to contribute to help expand the number of such songs.”

GR: How would you describe your sound to people that haven’t listened to you yet?

ET: “We think Romania nailed it when they said we sounded ‘like ice-cream on a grilled chicken breast.’ Since we do each song in somewhat of a different style and with a rotating roster of guest singers, while at the macro level we’d fit under the electro-pop umbrella, on a micro-level, the one thing listeners should expect to get is diversity.

“Our latest song might be an anthemic indie-rock track, but the one before it had more in common with the jungle and the wider EDM scenes than with any subgenre of rock. The through-line of our sound is the combination of pop/EDM production and rock energy, packaged in a wrapping of experimentation. Mr. Ice Cream, meet Mr Grilled Chicken Breast.”

GR: What influences you to write music? Any key themes or topics that you write about?

ET: “Our experiences, thoughts, trials, and tribulations. As with Better Than Advertised, we try to write from experience. Of course, given that it’s three of us in the group, we don’t go about trying to fabricate a collective experience. One of us will bring a topic and sketch out a path for the song, and the other two will fill in the blanks and help tighten the narrative. The latter is particularly important to us. We try to polish the original idea and storytell in every song.

“Sometimes this narrative isn’t straightforward, but it always follows the main theme and develops it throughout the track. A key concept that links our songs is self-discovery. Either by talking about relationships (Please Stop), the cathartic power of music (Kaleidoscope), or the challenges of modern-day life (Your Own MC), we explore all avenues that can provide self-awareness and can help us discover who we are as artists and as people. 

GR: Which bands/musicians are/have been your strongest musical influences?

ET: “When we started making music, Muse, Iron Maiden and Linkin Park were huge influences. Our music also reflected this. Our first EP, Circus, was more or less a metal album disguised as an alternative rock record. Our tastes have developed and now we enjoy listening to and are influenced by a plethora of artists from different scenes. Some key ones include: Twenty-One Pilots, The Weeknd, Chvrches and Years & Years.”

GR: What have you got coming up through the rest of 2019? New music, new gigs, recording etc…?

ET: “Recording and releasing a song every few weeks. We’re currently working on a new one that we’re dropping in late August and another one for September/October. We love working like this. It keeps things fresh and creative juices flowing. We’re currently trying to build a stronger online presence before we take up gigging again, but we’ve already started throwing ideas on how to approach the London live scene in 2019/2020. We’ll make sure to keep everyone posted!”

GR: Anything else you’d like people to know about you/your music?

ET: “Since we do all of our social media ourselves, we’re the ones posting, commenting, and liking on all our content. People can always find out more about us, stay in the loop, get access to songs and videos in advance, or just have a chat by DMing us (or however they like to engage) on any platform.
