Discover This: Allergic To Humans

Swedish trio Allergic To Humans bring us a rough and ready, raw, energetic garage punk sound that’s laced with funky riffs and catchy vocals.

The band sent us Blood Rage, the opening track from last year’s debut EP, to have a listen to. It opens up with a cool stabbing riff then noisy guitars under fun vocals, then the riff returns under the vocals. An ascending guitar lick then comes in, with distant organ underneath, before diving into the riff under cries of “Blood rage, Coming down with road rage.”

Huge crashes of cymbal take over alongside the pounding riff to bring it to a heavy ending. Check it out in the video below:

Also from the EP is the band’s self-titled (which is a little unusual) fantastically frenetic track Allergic To Humans, which features, in their words, “skronky” bursts of saxophone alongside pounding piano and big energetic choruses. You can check it out on Spotify (but for some reason embed links aren’t working on here…)

We had a chat with drummer Karl-Henrik Westerholm to find out more. Read on below…

GR: Who are Allergic to Humans?

KHW: “Allergic To Humans are Henric Uhrbom (bass), Karl-Henrik Westerholm (Drums) and David Löfqvist (vocals, guitar) from Stockholm, Sweden. We all originate from the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea but formed the band in Stockholm because we knew each other from Gotland and we wanted to rock out.

GR: You sent us Blood Rage to have a listen to. What should people be expecting from the song?

KHW: “The title comes from two 80s horror movies with the same name and is about bloodthirst. Its a full-on boogie assault inspired by Donald Trump and the Spencer Davis Group.”

GR: How would you describe your sound to people that haven’t listened to you yet?

KHW: “Creedence Clearwater Revival playing Rövkrok with Black Flag.”

GR: What influences you to write music? Any key themes or topics that you write about?

KHW: “We write about bad vibes and good vibes. Sometimes they intertwine.”

GR: Which bands/musicians are/have been your strongest musical influences?

KHW: “We are influenced by a lot of stuff, Dr. Feelgood, Devo, Bo Diddley, His Hero Is Gone, Problem, The Gories, Halo of Flies, The Coasters, The Kinks, The Sonics, The Cramps, The Damned to name just a few.”

GR: What have you got coming up through the rest of 2019?

KHW: “We are recording our debut full-length album right now at Kapsylen Studios in Stockholm with the genius Mr Jugglo producing. It will probably be released early 2020 by the mighty Novoton records. A single might show up this fall.”

GR: Anything else you’d like people to know about you/your music?

KHW: “Humans are garbage.”

You can follow Allergic To Humans on Facebook and Instagram, and check out their music on Spotify and Bandcamp.
