Fusing post-hardcore with the catchiness of punk is always going to be a winning combination, and Swedish newcomers Yellow Pages only confirm this assumption.
The band, whose members come from several prominent bands within the Swedish underground scene, blend catchy melodies, anthemic choruses and intense, fast-paced rockiness that already has us begging for more.
They released debut single Daemon at the end of October, which gives us plenty to get excited about. It kicks off with distant guitars and drums that burst into life under lively shouty opening vocals.
Palm-muted guitars come in under clean vocals “I’m sick of your excuses, don’t wanna hear it” then a big scream of “But then again I had no choice.” A catchy singalong chorus “And I ‘ve become everything I thought I’d be, Realised that you were me, I’ve come so far, Looking back is a mistake, I’ll make sure I’ll never break” over cool punky guitar chords.
More screamy vocals return in a verse of lively guitars, then return in another immediate verse that feeds into a second chorus. That drops into layered spoken vocals over more laid-back guitars, then emotional sounding vocals give way to one final blast of the chorus. It’s super-catchy, melodic yet heavy and highly enjoyable. Give it a listen below:
We chatted to band member Edwin Ekstedt to find out a little more about this exciting new band. Read on below…
Who are Yellow Pages? And where are you from? What’s the backstory, how did you get together?
EE: “We started out as a three-piece in the fall of 2016 and started writing songs during rehersals. We realized that we needed a singer and bass player which led me to ask former Still Echo vocalist Zeke to join the band. Former Heartaches member Adrian recently joined on rhythm guitar.
GR: You just released Daemon. What should people be expecting from the song? What inspired you to write it?
EE: “It started out as an instrumental demo recorded in my living room which we later brought into the studio where we talked about writing lyrics with a relatable message about something that we’ve all experienced. A song about doubting yourself and being stuck in a destructive loop.”
GR: How would you describe your sound to people that haven’t listened to you yet?
EE: “Our sound is heavily influenced by 00’s Post-Hardcore mixed with modern influences and every member brings their own touch to the table.”
GR: What influences you to write music? Any key themes or topics that you write about?
EE: “It depends on what inspires us at the moment and what’s going on in our lives.”
GR: Which bands/musicians are/have been your strongest musical influences?
EE: “Our strongest musical influences are probably Underoath, Saosin and Alesana but also contemporaries like Hindsight and Counterparts.”
GR: What have you got coming up through the rest of 2019 and into 2020?
EE: “We have two upcoming singles that are set to be released the following months and we will head back into the studio to record some new material during 2020.”
GR: Anything else you’d like people to know about you/your music?
EE: “We make music that we are passionate about. Music that we would like to listen to ourselves and that we feel isn’t being represented in the alternative music scene at the moment.”
