If you like your punk rock fast-paced yet a little emotionally charged then chances are you’re going to love the sound of Canadian newcomers Otherwives.
The quartet have a bit of a Yellowcard feeling about them, with lively guitars supporting the engaging vocals of Zach Mesic. And this is perfectly portrayed in I Feel Alone, which the band sent us to get a feel for their sound.
It opens up with a blast of guitar chords then a funky little high-pitched guitar lick jumps in over lively guitars and drums. Zach’s vocals eventually take over, supported by palm-muted guitars and lingering high-pitched guitar notes and gradually increases in intensity with more shouted vocals.
It builds up to a big singalong chorus of “We’re practically made for love, But we keep falling out of it, Holdlessly holding on for what’s to come, I can’t pretend it’s all alright, Well I’m sorry I could not try, Tell me something I have always known, I feel alone.” A cool little blitz of high-pitched guitars jumps in and drops into another building verse. Give this really fun track a listen below:
The track is taken from the band’s second EP All You Ever Hoped For, which was released in October. You Missed Out gives us a taste for the band’s heavy punkiness, starting out with fun fast-paced guitars then drawn-out chords drop into a lively opening verse. Check it out in the video below:
That’s follow on the EP by the superb Your Disregard, which starts slowly with a light guitar lick and laid-back vocals. However, it eventually builds into an absolute monster of a track with heavier guitar chords under high-pitched guitars. Then Zach’s huge vocals jump in over the top to provide an intense, emotional prolonged outro that ends on booming guitar chords and drums. It’s a fantastic track, and you can give it a listen below:
We had a chat with the band to find out more. Read on below…
GR: Who are Otherwives?
OW: “Otherwives is Zach Mesic, Kain Seneca, Tye Hardy and Matteo Ramundo and we are all from a small city called Welland, Ontario. The band was originally formed through Zach and Kain who have been playing music together for a very long time.
“They then asked Tye to be in the band to start to get a full band going and later asked their Previous drummer Andrew to fill the missing spot. Later Andrew left Otherwives to pursue being the frontman of his other band Revive the Rose and that is when Andrew suggested that Matteo joined the band to be the new drummer.”
GR: You just released I Feel Alone. What should people be expecting from the song?
OW: “When people listen to I Feel Alone they should expect a lot of emotion and energy to come through the song. We got inspired to write it because we wanted to have a song that touched on the matter of sometimes you can feel alone even when your surrounded by many people and that its okay to not be okay.”
GR: How would you describe your sound to people that haven’t listened to you yet?
OW: “Our sound is a pop-punk influenced sound that has mixes of alternative and rock with a unique basis coming from the vocals and lead guitar.”
GR: What influences you to write music? Any key themes or topics that you write about?
OW: “We are influenced to write music based on the fact that we solely love it and have a passion for it. When we are playing music there is nothing else that matters at that point in time, it’s about having fun and giving it your all with your friends that have the same interests as you and it also gives you the freedom to express your emotions through something other than words.”
GR: Which bands/musicians are/have been your strongest musical influences?
OW: “Some bands that have been big influences for us are Blink-182, Sum-41, Transit, Brand New, and Rise Against.”
GR: What have you got coming up through the rest of 2019 and into 2020?
OW: “For the rest of the year we will be playing shows and making music videos to help the release of our new EP, we really want to focus on getting our name out there and then next year we will begin to write for our future album.”
GR: Anything else you’d like people to know about you/your music?
OW: “One thing we would like people to know about our music is that we make it in hopes that others like it as much as we do, seeing peoples comments and reactions to our music is what makes us want to make more, so good or bad feel free to give us your feedback!”
