St. Louis five-piece This Is Falling have honed an intriguing sound that tows the line between metal and post-hardcore with elements of industrial, electronic sounds and 80s influences. And they’re definitely the first band to reference Top Gun as a musical influence to us.
If that sounds like there’s a lot going on then you’d be right, but the band absolutely make it work. The result is a heavy, engaging sound led by intense vocals, booming guitar riffs, low-tuned breakdowns and catchy choruses.
Having originally started out back in 2009, This Is Falling split up three years later but reformed last year. Their first new music since reforming is the excellent 7-track EP Reprise, which was released at the start of this month.
From it, the band sent us Whisper, which epitomises their crossover between big metal sounds and the more melodic post-hardcore side. It opens up with a drum roll that drops into a fun guitar intro with distant backing vocals then echoey clean vocals take over alongside little bursts of guitar. That builds into a big singalong chorus of “I’m hearing the voices again, It’s over before it began, Like a whisper in the dark, You are the only answer,” which are answered by engaging backing vocals.
Big screamed vocals take over in the second verse alongside big driving drums and drop into the catchy chorus, which this time extends with the vocals “I feel like I’m going insane, I know that it won’t stay the same, Like a whisper in the dark, You are the only answer.”
That drops into stabbing guitars under screamed vocals, which feed into a final blast of the chorus and atmospheric guitars and backing vocals that bring the track to a close. Check it out in the video below:
Another personal favourite from the EP is second track Apart, which opens up with a menacing opening riff and intense screamed vocals. A really cool stabbing guitar riff jumps in, then it suddenly drops into engaging clean vocals that flow into a big catchy chorus.
It immediately returns to the intense screams and delicious low-tuned stabbing guitars, which again drop straight into the catchy chorus. Second time around, the chorus gives way to low-tuned guitars under huge screamed vocals then huge stabbing guitar chords. The clean vocals jump in over lighter guitars and lead into a final chorus.
I love the diversity and complete polar opposites of the track’s verse and chorus sections, and you can check it out here:
Previously, the band released a lyric video for the potentially even more hard-hitting yet still melodic It’s All In My Head, which you can check out here:
We had a chat with the band to find out more about them, read on below…
GR: Who are This Is Falling?
TIF: “This Is Falling is a five-piece post-hardcore/metal band from St. Louis, Missouri. We were a band from 2009 to 2012 and then reformed in 2019. We originally met playing music in various bands around St. Louis and bonded over our love for metal and 80’s music. The same loves are still very much there.”
GR: You just released Whisper. What should people be expecting from the song?
TIF: “We went for a crossover rock song with the classic elements of post-hardcore/metal. The lyric about finding ways to fight your depression. It features big riffs, catchy hooks, thumping bass, and a larger than life breakdown.”
GR: How would you describe your sound to people that haven’t listened to you yet?
TIF: “Big music, in your face vocals, and monster choruses.”
GR:: What influences you to write music? Any key themes or topics that you write about?
TIF: “Our main influences are the Top Gun Soundtrack and Busch Light (we’re watching our figures!). Our latest release ‘Reprise’ was written about our breakup in 2012, what we have experienced/learned since the breakup, and getting back together.”
GR: Which bands/musicians are/have been your strongest musical influences?
TIF: “We have a special place in our hearts for Kenny Loggins, Huey Lewis, Tears for Fears, Anberlin, Jimmy Eat World, and Metallica.”
GR: What have you got coming up in 2020?
TIF: “We just dropped our brand new comeback seven song EP Reprise on 3 July. Whisper is the first featured track. We will be playing the brand new venue Red Flag in St. Louis, MO on 15 August (pandemic pending) to celebrate the release of the EP with a bunch of sweet bands. We will be working on recording new music throughout 2020.”
GR: Anything else you’d like people to know about you/your music?
TIF: “We enjoy the hell out of it and hope you do too!”
