Discover This: Thump Whistle

Thump Whistle might seem like a bit of a random name for a band and… well… it is. That’s because the Pleasanton, California, quartet came up with the name using the Random Bandname Generator.

But there’s nothing random about the sound of Thump Whistle, who have honed a pure, heavy rock’n’roll sound that fuses the engaging vocals of Joe Tinker with big riffing and plenty of delicious guitar solos. The band takes inspiration from the world’s greatest rock bands of the last few decades, along with their experiences in the military, as Joe was a Corporal in the Marines and bassist Kurt Rushlow served in the Navy.

To get a taste for their sound, they sent us recent single New Energy, which opens up with rolling drums then a chugging guitar riff that continues under an engaging open verse. The lyrics intensify in big cries of “That’s why I’ve got to be, What I wanted, Got to dream, From where I’m standing it’s clear to see, This is our time now to bring new energy.”

The chugging riff returns with little flurries of higher notes and drops back into another engaging verse and chorus. That feeds into a cheeky guitar solo, which gives way to a final verse and intense chorus. Check out this awesome track here:

Since that track, they’ve released a couple more including the excellent Fortified. It opens up with light guitar and cymbals, light vocals come in, then chugging guitars support more intense vocals that end with the line “Got a 45, 45 strapped to my side.” Cool guitar riffs jump in, and give way to a verse that again intensifies alongside chugging guitars, before another awesome guitar solo takes over. Give it a listen here:

While the band’s debut single Next To You is a slow builder that develops into an absolute chest-pumping, scream along at the top of your lungs banger. Check it out here:

We had a chat with the band to find out more about them, their music and an upcoming debut album. Read on here…

GR: Who are Thump Whistle? And where are you from? What’s the backstory, how did you get together?

TW: “Thump Whistle is an original four piece rock band based in Pleasanton, California. Joe Tinker (Vocals/Guitar/Keys) and Kurt Rushlow (Bass) have been close friends since middle school. In 2017 we were working together and thought about starting a band just to do it. We reconnected with another friend from middle school, Tim Benton (Drummer). Our sessions started as a cover band that wanted more. Starting to create our own songs was a bit rough…

“After two lead guitarists didn’t work out, Joe moved next door to Anthony Bischel (Lead Guitar) who became an instant fit for our sound. It wasn’t long before we had a ton of original material. Thump Whistle became our name after a long and incredibly annoying search for one that wasn’t taken and fit with what we wanted. In fact, we used randombandnamegenerator.com and laughed our way into Thump Whistle. It basically just works.”

GR: You just released New Energy. What should people be expecting from the song? What inspired you to write it?

TW: “Our goal is to bring our sound to the world and not hold back. Having been through our share of ups and downs as a band, we found ourselves with writer’s block. Joe asked Tim to play something he hadn’t done on the drums with ‘more toms!’ and BOOM we just clicked with the track. It practically wrote itself in ten minutes and we ran with it. Joe wrote vocals the way he felt while singing over the fresh track the first time we played. It symbolizes how we are re-energized and ready to go after our dream of releasing our album.”

GR: How would you describe your sound to people that haven’t listened to you yet?

TW: “We are a rock band, our sound draws from our influences which are almost as broad as the term ‘rock’ is. The combination of our influences allows us to bring rock back from the dead with dash of nostalgia and play something fresh you have never heard.”

GR: What influences you to write music? Any key themes or topics that you write about?

TW: “We focus on our experiences and emotions that help us connect with our own music just as we hope others do. Our album, Shadow on the Wall, is heavily themed with some of the experiences Joe encountered while serving in the Marine Corps, specifically overseas in Iraq in 2005.”

GR: Which bands/musicians are/have been your strongest musical influences?

TW: “From AC/DC and Lynyrd Skynrd to Pearl Jam, Metallica and Alice in Chains to Queen, Primus and Red Hot Chili Peppers to Breaking Benjamin our sound is driven by all the amazing rock bands of the past few decades. Each of our personal influences comes through in the music. We can’t wait to show the funk our bassist has in his repertoire. We can’t wait until this album is released and our second album is underway as we speak.”

GR: What have you got coming up through the rest of 2020?

TW: “We are in the process of releasing our first album, Shadow on the Wall, through out the remainder of 2020. Fortified was released August 7th, which as a band is one of our favorites, and we have a total of 10 tracks on the album that we can’t wait to get out there. As for shows… well, shows are tough here in California due to Covid, but we have focused on preparing album #2. A blessing in disguise.”

GR: Anything else you’d like people to know about Thump Whistle/your music?

TW: “We have heard so many times that we sound like another band. But each song has so many bands we sound like. It is our goal to sound like us and only produce authentic music that we love and relate to. We have heard that rock is dead and we want a rock revival, especially now! #Rockrevival. If anyone loves our music as much as we do, give us a follow and share our music with others.”
