Discover This: Banned In G.B.G

There are few things we love more than discovering an exciting new Swedish rock band, and we’ve got a cracker for you in Gothenburg newcomers Banned In G.B.G.

The band offer up a raucous concoction of punk-fuelled, riff-heavy hard rock led by gruff, engaging vocals. And this is unleashed upon the world in their debut self-titled EP, which was released in August.

From it, they sent us the lively Set the World on Fire, which opens up with a darting guitar riff, drums enter and drops into a big rock out. Vocals take over supported by drawn-out guitars, then cries of “Why live for tomorrow when you can live today?” feeds into a catchy, rapid chorus.

A shoutier second verse flows into the chorus, then descending guitars are answered by blitzing mini guitar solos that drop into a final chorus. It’s fast, fun and heavy, and we love it, give it a listen here:

Also on the EP is opening track Crashed Out, which opens up with repeating high-pitched guitar notes that continue under drawn-out guitars and rolling drums. A low guitar riff kicks in over lively drums and feeds into a catchy opening verse. A fun call and answer chorus follows and flows into the engaging verse and another chorus. Give it a listen here:

And, keep your ear out for a huge conclusion to the EP on the big rocky, guitar solo-led outro to the awesome final track Go Ahead.

We had a chat with the band to find out more about them, the new EP and their music in general. Read on below…

GR: Who are Banned In G.B.G?

BIGBG: “BIGBG is a rock band from Gothenburg/Sweden. We started out as a recording-project and ended up as a band. Zvonko (bass) was getting musicians together to rehearse and to record an EP. That happened!”

GR: You sent us Set the World on Fire. What should people be expecting from the song?

“Well we’re releasing three more songs actually, a whole EP… Riff-rock tunes somewhere between punk / rock and metal with strong vocal hooks. It’s inspired by things around you, things you’re going through, different emotions. All the bands and music we grew up loving.. Too many to name here!”

GR: How would you describe your sound to people that haven’t listened to you yet?

BIGBG: “Well that’s hard… It’s for the listener to decide what we sound like. Punk rock at the bottom with heavy riffs on top maybe!!

GR: What influences you to write music?

Everything! usually stuff we’re going through at the moment. Random stuff… life… we hope the listener will find their own connection to the songs and decide what it means for them.”

GR: Which bands/musicians are/have been your strongest musical influences?

BIGBG: “Ramones, Motörhead, Sex Pistols to name a few.”

GR: What have you got coming up in 2020?

We’re aiming for a full length album, we sure got a lot of songs anyway… No gigs sadly. All that got cancelled of course. Can’t wait to get back on the live stage.. So ask us again in 2021! But LOTS of new music in the pipeline as we speak. We’re in the last stage of preparation, rehearsing and tweaking the new material ready for going into the studio in beginning of September.

GR: Anything else you’d like people to know about Banned in G.B.G / your music?

BIGBG: Listening to us will make you happy, sad, angry and strong!
