Introducing: The Clockworks

Irish quartet The Clockworks have mastered the art of rolling relatable stories and colloquial tales into engaging, high-energy rocky post-punk anthems. This has made them one of the most exciting bands to come out of Ireland in recent years and helped them quickly establish themselves on the British rock scene.

The band began with school pals James McGregor (vocals and guitar), Sean Connelly (guitar) and Damian Greaney (drums), who added Tom Freeman (bass) to the mix when they moved to Galway City from their hometown of Loughrea. Upon moving to London in 2019, they were swiftly signed to Creation Records, which is run by Alan McGee who worked with bands like Oasis, Primal Scream and Super Furry Animals. McGee has described the band as: “The best rehearsal I have seen since the 90s with Oasis is The Clockworks. What a band,” which is high praise indeed.

Furthermore, when asked to describe The Clockworks sound, the band simply tell us: “Hard for us to say. To quote Alan McGee, ‘the best band out of Ireland since My Bloody Valentine.’ Will that do?”

Our latest taste of what the band have to offer is Feels So Real, which was released today. It opens up with rolling drums and building guitars that feed into a catchy, edgy opening verse. Heavier guitars kick in as it feeds into repeats of “It feels so real to me.” A funky little guitar lick feeds into another engaging verse and catchy chorus, which continues into more intense vocals over a spinning guitar lick. That feeds into a final blast of the chorus to bring the track to a big rocky ending.

That follows the equally catchy Enough Is Never Enough, which portrays the band’s wonderful storytelling ability. It opens up with a cool moody riff and brief opening line “It was a Tuesday and it was… bleak,” then drums kick in under the riff. It drops into an engaging opening verse “Torn from the wreckage of a broken home, Only knows the love that he was shown, He barges into a cafĂ© he owns, To bark marching orders, At poor kitchen porters.”

Almost spoken vocals “And his grandmother was a proud Filipino, Slips his mind as he dips his vote, Into the world of a well known racist, Who explains it all in words he knows” take over under stabbing palm-muted guitars. Catchy repeats of “These fingers were made for pointing” over lively guitars feed into repeats of “Enough is never enough” then drops into the opening riff.

A mopre laid-back verse feeds into the catchy chorus, then the opening riff returns over more intense vocals to bring the track to a heavy conclusion. On the track, the band told us: “The reception has been amazing; since the song premiered on the Annie Mac show on Radio 1, the plays have really been racking up. We love this song, but we won’t tell you what to expect from it.” Check it out for yourself in the video below:

The Clockworks have rapidly collated a back catalogue of absolute bangers, including their excellent debut single Bills and Pills and the engaging, intense The Future Is Not What It Was. While personal favourite track, Stranded in Stansted further portrays the engaging, relatable sound of The Clockworks with a big catchy chorus that’ll be stuck in your head for days. The band succinctly describe The Clockworks offering as: “Kitchen-sink stories about real people leading real lives. The city we live in. Those sort of things. James is the master of capturing a feeling with his words.”

On their musical influences, the band tell us: “The bands that inspired us to start a band are The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys etc… Everybody says that, but it’s true. Since then, some of the artists that have inspired us include Billie Eilish and Finneas, Kendrick Lamar, some Kanye, John Cooper Clarke, The Streets, The Smiths.”

You can expect plenty more from The Clockworks soon, as they tell us new music is “a certainty,” and are holding out hope of having UK gigs by the end of the year.
