Discover This: Goofy Cow

Czech Republic rockers Goofy Cow are an intriguing bunch. Not only do they have an awesome band name, they’ve also pledged to make every song different in song and style – which owes much to their combined punk, metal and pop roots.

The trio of Kuba ‘Kjůbs’ Pavlík (guitar and vocals), David ‘Dee’ Klimek (bass) and Venca ‘RektStar’ Čikl released EPs in 2017 and 2018, then an acoustic collection last year, before releasing latest single Break Me Down at the end of last month.

The song opens with stabs of piano and a building synth sound that continue under Kuba’s vocals, with the instrumentals building in intensity in the background. A cool punky riff comes in under the vocals “Can’t believe you’re doing this to me, Putting me in such misery, I’m broke up torn up I’m suffering.” That bursts into a big singalong chorus “Break me down, I’m givin’ up, Your reckless heart is tearing mine apart,” with each line separated by cool little guitar flourishes.

A synth solo takes over with Kuba then bursting into a bit of rap, then effect-laden vocals build towards another chorus. The pace drops right down, then spinning synth and keyboard chords build the intensity under repeats of “I’m not in the state” then stabbing guitars under big vocals bring it to an end on a rocky high. It’s lively and diverse, and we love it. Check it out in the fun video below:

As mentioned, there’s a really eclectic mix to their sound, including the fun, classic pop-punk sound of Over Again and slightly heavier Bring Me Back – but they do love to mix things up within the same song.

We had a chat with Kuba to find out a bit more about the band and the apparently thriving Czech rock scene…

GR: Who are Goofy Cow? And where are you from?

KP: “We are a bunch of goofy people making music and doing what they love. We all come from Olomouc in Czech Republic, it’s a beautiful town in the heart of Moravia.”

GR: You just released Break Me Down. What should people be expecting from the song? What inspired you to write it?

KP: “Well if you ever heard any of our songs, this will be definitely something new: new sound, new style, new meaning of lyrics. The entire song combines all kinds of styles and emotions so it would definitely get your attention. The inspiration came from one of my (singer) experiences with my old friend, I trusted him with pretty much everything and when we got in one big argument he shook me how cruel he could be. It left me with anger, hate and sadness at once but I am grateful for this experience.

GR: How would you describe your sound to people that haven’t listen to you yet?

KP: “It’s really hard to describe. The singer started in a punk rock band, the drummer in a metal band and the bass player in a pop band, so if you combine all this together it makes Goofy Cow.”

“We are trying to make every song somehow different and sometimes really different, as Break Me Down. So when people come to our show having only listened to one song they are surprised what kind of music are we playing.”

GR: What influences you to write music? Any key themes or topics that you write about?

KP: “I think writing music is a dream of everyone who loves music, it’s at least my case. The most influence for me is that in music are no boundaries, that’s what makes music and all kinds of art special. I don’t have any specific themes or topics I just write my stories and I’m trying to deliver it in the way that as many as possible listeners can relate to it.

GR: Which bands/musicians are/have been your strongest musical influences?

KP: “For me, definitely Sum 41 and Hopsin, there are many other bands as Green Day, Blink 182, Papa Roach, but these two are top.”

You’re the first Czech band we’ve met! How much of a rock scene is there in the Czech Republic? And how much support is there for new Czech bands?

KP: “Too much I think! It’s really hard to get through all the bands that are on the scene right now. We have here in Czech Republic lots of band competitions that help new bands and give them the opportunity to play some festivals etc…”

GR: What have you got coming up through the rest of 2019?

KP: “In September we are heading to the studio with two new singles, through October and November we are planning a tour Critical Acclaim and we are constantly working on new material so lots of new stuff is coming.”

GR: Anything else you’d like people to know about you/your music?

KP: “As I said, we are trying to make every new song somehow original. We are open to pretty much everything that we know as far as the style of music, just listen to our first song and the last, it speaks for itself, totally different and better I hope.

“We are trying to show people that being open to all kind of music style is good because only this way you can explore new music.”
