It’s been a while since we featured any Finnish rock bands, but that’s all changing now with rising Helsinki quartet Primal Maze.
Latest single Raise The Dead has got us really excited about what’s to come from the band, fusing catchy vocals with big lively riffs. It opens up with a funky little guitar solo that drops into guitar chords and a cool lick.
Vocals jump in over drums and bass, then palm-muted guitars build up to a big catchy chorus “I raise up, I’ll summon or raise the dead, You can’t touch me, Ready to raise hell.” Check it out below:
We’re also loving the sound of previous single Erase You, which opens up with a dirty guitar riff that feeds into drawn-out vocals. A cool riff jumps in over a lively bassline and intersects edgy vocals then gives way to repeats of “You erase me” then a cry of “I erase you” ushers the big riff back in.
It builds up with a bigger smash of the filthy riff over crashing cymbals and rolling drums bringing the track to a heavy ending. Check it out in the video below:
We chatted to bassist Janne to find out more about the band. Read on below…
GR: Who are Primal Maze?
JS: “We are a four member rock group from Finland formed by Ville Lamminmäki, Jussi Turtiainen, Janne Siirilä and Hannu Pölönen. Ville is the singer and second guitarist, Jussi plays guitar, Janne bass and Hannu drums.
“It all began from an ad Ville had put on a website for Finnish musicians to which Jussi replied. Kind of an old-school way in the age of modern communication technology. In the beginning, the game plan was to play cover songs but this turned out to be not enough and therefore Hannu and Janne were recruited in 2018. This was a great move for the band since Janne and Hannu have played together for years. Secondly, we shared a common musical ground so it was convenient to co-write the songs.”
GR: You just released Raise the Dead. What should people be expecting from the song?
JS: “We sought to make a catchy and dope song which would become an instant earworm. Lyrically, it’s about empowerment, rising up to beat the odds and following your passions. Something which we very firmly believe in.
“We have already received good feedback on the song. It was a fun and inspiring piece to write! Not to mention that you can hear the influences of Scandinavian action rock in the song.”
GR: How would you describe your sound to people that haven’t listened to you yet?
JS: “In short, the band leans on hook-driven melodies and raucous soundscapes. Various styles of music from classic rock, grunge to metal serve as a source of inspiration for the band.”
GR: What influences you to write music? Any key themes or topics that you write about?
JS: “The main sources musically are other bands but any piece of art or cultural item that gets you into a creative state of mind is invaluable. In terms of lyrics, Ville’s themes often rise from introspective reflection and touch upon the grittier, darker sides of the psyche. The human mind is the ultimate and most primal of mazes!”
GR: Which bands/musicians are/have been your strongest musical influences?
JS: “We have played in a number of bands, played gigs and made music for several years but there are a number of influences that we share. In fact, the list would be overwhelming. In short, these albums have made a huge impact on us: Alice in Chains – Dirt, Foo Fighters – One by One, Queens of the Stone Age – Songs for the Deaf, and the debut album by Royal Blood.”
GR: What have you got coming up through the rest of 2019 and into 2020?
JS: “We have two unreleased songs, Grace and Judas Christ, which are scheduled to be released this year. Currently, we are promoting our very recent and forthcoming releases. Also, we will release a music video made for one of our previous songs, Erase You. It’s a blast! These things will keep us busy but we promise that you will hear from us in 2020.”
GR: Anything else you’d like people to know about you/your music?
“Please check and follow us out on Spotify, other streaming services and social media. The best is yet to come!”
