Discover This: Room: IV

Channelling the sounds of classic hard rock and metal bands of decades gone by, Bolton-based Room: IV are a welcome reminder of the power of no-frills, good old rock’n’roll.

The quartet combine searing, powerful vocals with melodic guitars and blitzing solos, alongside hard-hitting rhythm – all of which ticks all our boxes.

They sent us their second single Brothers In Destiny to have a listen to. It opens up with light looping guitar riff with a little echoey laid-back solo in the background. They continue under light engaging vocals, then burst into chunkier, distorted chords as the vocals burst into powerful life “The darkness hides the other one who isn’t me, Two heads one man, No-one else can see he isn’t me.”

That feeds into a chorus of repeats of “Brothers in destiny,” then a cool little mini riff drops into a more upbeat verse with piercing guitars in support, and drops into another chorus. A third chorus is followed by a huge shredding guitar solo, then a cool little descending guitar lick and chunky chords that drop into a final round of verse and chorus. Give it a listen below:

We had a chat with frontman Mick to find out more about the band. Give it a read below…

GR: Who are Room: IV?

Mick: “Five older boys with no sense. Mick, the most handsome frontman ever, Dom the drummer, the less said the better, Mark, an honorary member now cos he left us for a better life, Jamie the bass boy, what a punk, and Callum, of the slicked back hairdo variety.

“We’re all from the northwest of England in a town called Bolton.”

GR: What’s the backstory, how did you get together?

Mick: “Me and Jamie had just broken up with other bands and I was advised about a bass player looking for a band. We talked Dom into playing, then my niece’s boyfriend (now husband) Mark joined on guitar duties and he was chief riff writer. He then left and Callum filled the void.”

GR: You just released Brothers In Destiny. What should people be expecting from the song?

Mick: “I guess its a story of the monster inside of all of us inspired by bad decisions and a psychotic episode.”

GR: How would you describe your sound to people that haven’t listened to you yet?

Mick: “Old school hard rock meets Iron Maidenesque vocals.”

GR: What influences you to write music? And any key themes or topics that you write about?

Mick: “We love it. It is great fun and it almost keeps us young. We write about the duality of spirit and the fight to succeed.”

GR: Which bands/musicians are/have been your strongest musical influences?

Mick: “Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Metallica and Rage Against The Machine. There are many others but those are the main ones.”

GR: What have you got coming up through the rest of 2019 and into 2020?

Mick: “We are doing local gigs and polishing our first full album ready for recording.”

GR: Anything else you’d like people to know about you/your music?

We have another song out at the moment called The Blessed. You will find it on all good streaming sites (and some of the shit ones, too). Other than that, just play our music loud – it sounds better!”
