Introducing: Sweet Crisis

Cambridge six-piece Sweet Crisis have honed a delicious mixture of blues and rock’n’roll inspired by classic rock records they ‘borrowed’ from their dads.

The core of the band, Leo Roberts (vocals), Piers Mortimer (guitar) and Dave Cullen (drums), first met at school in the early 2000s and have been writing, recording and performing music together for over a decade. But they formed Sweet Crisis in its current form last year, with the additions of Dale Taylor, Matt Duduryn and Dom Briggs-Fish.

On their sound, the band tell us: “Classic rock n roll, blues, soul vibes. Old school rock n’ roll really. It’s just what we love to do – mates in a room, plug in guitars and just jam.”

The band sent through their third single Black Magic, which is a deliciously infectious blues-infused, soulful rock ballad. It opens up with cool laid-back guitar chords and a sweeping lick supported by light drums and organ sounds. A super cool opening verse sees Leo’s vocals take over, which leads into catchy cries of “I’m so affected by this black magic, It’s inside my head / I can’t break free.”

Another cool verse sees Leo pick up the reigns with the delightful lyrics “What you doing to me with that black magic potion, It’s like the supernatural powers of evil, She’s mixing it up staring down her cauldron, Laughing to herself about what she’s controlling.” A second chorus gives way to a blitzing guitar solo, which drops into cool backing vocals and a little organ solo that feeds into a big last chorus.

This is a seriously good song from a really exciting new band. Check it out in the video below:

On the track, the band told us: “Crisis go for the classic soul, blues, rock n roll vibes, and Black Magic really hits the spot for this, so we love this song. We’re really happy with how it’s come out in the recording.”

While on how the track came about, they add: “We were out gigging in Switzerland early in the year, and on the way out there we were playing the band a bunch of songs we’d written over the years and one of them was Black Magic – which we weren’t intending on even playing that tour (and to be quite honest I had completely forgotten about). The band were like ‘this song is awesome why aren’t we doing this?’ And we looked at each other, and were like ‘That’s a good point why aren’t we doing it!’

“So we started playing it that tour, made the tour the pre-production and rehearsals for the song. It sounded so good, as soon as we landed back in the UK we went straight back into my studio in Cambridge and recorded it straight away! It came out so good it became our first single from this album.”

Sweet Crisis are heavily influenced by the likes of Free, Black Keys, Jimi Hendrix, Gary Clark Jnr, Humble Pie, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. And on what inspires their music, they tell us: “We’ve always written music, it’s odd, rather than listening to other music and learning to play that growing up we just wrote music instead! Much more fun. And what we ended up doing is learning to write music. Practice makes perfect I guess! (Still practising!)

“I guess it’s just what’s happening in our lives at this particular moment in time. Black Magic is an old song we’ve had kicking around in the locker for a few years now, and the way it came about us doing it is funny actually.
