Nearly 12 months ago we introduced you to the awesome sound of our former New Band of the Week Lightscape. Now the band are in with a chance of winning £50,000 and a place in the final of the Unsigned Music Awards having been named in the Top 100 of revolutionary music competition Salute Music Makers.
The Norfolk rockers have seen off competition from some 2,000 entrants, and their success is in your hands with the voting system being via a world-first Facebook Messenger bot – which is actually pretty cool. Sign up for it here, then go through the quick Facebook chat process to get started, and visit the Lightscape profile here.
Spearheaded by Feargal Sharkey, the former frontman of The Undertones, Salute provides a platform for up-and-coming British songwriters. Its team of curators, including Ras Kwame, Chris Tofu OBE, Jonathan Quarmby, Simon Perry (ReverbNation), Fiona Bevan, Dee Adam and Kwame Kwaten in its team of curators, evaluated and judged the top 100 entrants before opening up to an innovative new style of public voting.
The competition winners will take home £50,000 in cash, while the other five shortlisted finalists will each win £10,000 – so this is a big deal.
A Salute spokesperson told us: “Salute Music Makers offers musicians across the UK the opportunity to change their musical career entirely, without the unfair attachments that come with the many UK music competitions. The competition is great for putting a spotlight on otherwise unheard music and showcasing that to the masses.
“The Salute competition reflects the dramatic changes in the way new music is written, recorded and shared. Recent advancements in music technology enable music makers to create music almost anytime, anywhere, and the quality of organic, original music emerging from home studios has never been higher and is constantly evolving.
So, why have Lightscape been nominated? Well, because these guys are awesome. Their debut single Running is superb, while their latest track Live In Fear – which was written in light of the Paris terror attacks – is a belter. To find out more about them, check out our interview with them nearly 12 months ago, and vote for Live In Fear on Salute.
We spoke to Lightscape guitarist Sam Nichol to get the band’s take on being nominated. He told us: “We’re hell bent on having a decent career in this difficult industry and it’s not very often that any musician will come across this amount of money without a record deal. We’re going to use it to push onto next level opportunities, whether that’s touring with established bands, or spending it on a massive marketing campaign. The end result making Lightscape a household name.
“We already pour all of our spare money, time, blood, sweat etc… into this project. We hope viewers can gather this from our video for Live In Fear and that in turn will win their vote. The cash boost could give us an astronomical boost.”
And in terms of the competition itself, Sam added: “The voting process isn’t as straightforward as most competitions, because it’s all operated by a Facebook chat bot. But it is engaging, as it updates you every few days with the poll stats, this in itself creates more hype. The team behind it have been really informative too, creating videos to demonstrate voting and are really efficient with communication.”
So you know what to do, head over to Salute, give the Lightscape videos a watch here and help them win a significant amount of money that they massively deserve. Voting closes on 27 October, when the six artists most listened to through the bot will make it through to the final.
