Single Review: These Thousand Hills – Masquerade

We first discovered six-piece metalcore band These Thousand Hills almost a year ago, when they delivered a crushing opening set at the O2 Academy Islington 2 ahead of Esprit d’Air and Lightscape.

Since then we’ve been waiting eagerly for some new music to bring you from this exciting new band and I’m delighted to say the time is now. The Sussex-based band have released an absolute banger with Masquerade, the first single from their upcoming debut EP One Last Breath.

It opens with a bit of background noise and piano then a low-tuned guitar and bass are followed by an almighty scream from scream vocalist Harry White that ends on the line. A brutal fast-paced verse of big screamed vocals follows, ending on the line “We are madness, We are despair, We have no mercy, We wonder where” then a big smash-up of guitars ends on a cool growl and flies into another blitz of screams that ends with the line “We are the rage inside the cage, We will control the world tonight, We are the brings of life and death.”

That then drops into a singalong chorus from clean vocalist Jake Wickham, followed by a big verse that ends on a huge scream. Another screamed verse follows with big doomy cymbals in support, and flows into a singalong chorus with really cool high-pitched guitars supporting. Then whispered vocals build the tension into a big scream of “We’re gonna burn this place down” supported by booming low-tuned guitars, which build up with high-pitched spinning guitars towards a big last chorus.

This is a huge track that combines brutal lead screamed vocals with big singalong choruses against a backdrop of big metal instrumental support that’ll have you listening on repeat. All in all, Masquerade bodes very well for the incoming debut EP. Watch this space.

Harry told us: “I guess it’s a big comeback song, we’ve been around for years now working so hard, but we’re perfectionists in this band, and everything we had recorded up until now we’ve binned because it’s not been right for us. But now we really believe in whst we’re doing, and we’re releasing 12 tracks throughout this year.”

TTH will be launching One Last Breath with an EP launch show at Bar Forty Two in Worthing next Thursday (15 March). Oh, and it’s free entry so there’s no excuse not to get down there!

You can follow These Thousand Hills on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and check out their music on YouTube for now.
