Harnessing the high energy of hair metal and groove metal, Ford City rockers A Common Crown have honed a catchy yet heavy sound led by engaging vocals and plenty of big riffing.
The quintet of Jennifer Craven (vocals), Matt Ferrante (drums), Steve Craven (bass), Jay Snider and Kyle Matovcik (guitars) formed out of the ashes of a former band and set about putting together their excellent debut EP The Reckoning, which was released in February. It’s packed full of big powerful and catchy rock tunes led by Jenn’s delicious vocals, booming riffs and cheeky guitar solos aplenty.
To give us a taste for it, they sent us closing track Awake. It opens up with a cool laid-back lick, which is joined by a second guitar then drops into big chunky guitar chords. Jenn’s vocals take over, supported by chugging guitars, then feeds into a heavier pre-chorus. There’s a little reprise of the opening guitar leading into a big singalong chorus of “One lie, Two lies, Three lies it’s neverending, One lies, Two lies, Three lies awake” then a big cry of “Awake.”
A second chorus comes around quickly and gives way to a huge guitar solo, which drops straight into the pre-chorus then a final, heavy blast of the chorus and cries of “Awake.” Give this really catchy track a listen here:
The EP is full of powerful rock anthems, with a particular favourite being second track Blood On The Floor. It opens up with rolling drums, a chugging riff that continues under Jenn’s engaging opening vocals. That feeds into a building pre-chorus, which continues into a big singalong chorus. While the edgier side of the band also comes out in the big heavy scream emitted feeding into a second chorus, which gives way to a cool darting riff that continues under a big held high cry. Give it a listen below:
We had a chat with the band to find out more about them and their music. Read on below…
GR: Who are A Common Crown?
ACC: “We are a hard rock/alternative metal band from Ford City, about an hour north of Pittsburgh. A few of our original members had a band that disbanded, Jenn tried out for the old band but they decided to go out under a new name. Matt and Steve joined, then Kyle and Jay later on down the line.”
GR: You just released Awake. What should people be expecting from the song?
ACC: “An upbeat, high energy rock song with a catchy hook and punchy verses inspired by sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll!”
GR: How would you describe your sound to people that haven’t listened to you yet?
ACC: “A little bit of influence from many directions. Old school jazz all the way to Pantera. Our music is inspired by a lot of hair metal, groove metal, as well as some pop music, jazz and blues. Themes range from politics, partying and drugs.”
GR: Which bands/musicians are/have been your strongest musical influences?
Kyle: “For me personally: probably Pantera, Zakk Wylde, Sevendust, Killswitch Engage and Gary Moore.”
GR: What have you got coming up in 2020?
ACC: “We’re shooting to have another EP out by the fall. We recorded a song called Gemini that’s a little bit out of our normal sound but turned out great. Just need to lay the finishing touches on that and we hope to have that out ASAP. We’re playing Feel the Fire Fest, Pappy Zs, Liberty bash and a half, as well as a few others that month.”
GR: Anything else you’d like people to know about you/your music?
ACC: “Crack the Crown and crank it up!”
